How to Use the Shinkansen

The Shinkansen, also known as the bullet train, is the fastest and most comfortable way to travel around Japan. It connects major cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, and many more, making it perfect for sightseeing across the country.

If it’s your first time riding the Shinkansen, don’t worry—the process is much easier than you might expect.

Step 1: Buy Your Ticket

There are several ways to purchase Shinkansen tickets:

  • Ticket machines (many offer English)
  • JR ticket offices (Midori no Madoguchi)
  • Online through SmartEX (for the Tokaido Shinkansen)
  • Travel websites such as Klook

If you’re traveling during holidays or weekends, it’s a good idea to reserve your seat in advance.

Step 2: Reserved vs Non-Reserved Seats

There are two main seating options.

Reserved Seat

  • Guaranteed seat
  • Recommended during busy periods
  • Ideal for families and travelers with luggage

Non-Reserved Seat

  • Less expensive on some routes
  • Sit anywhere in the designated non-reserved cars
  • If all seats are taken, you may need to stand until a seat becomes available

Step 3: Enter the Station

Go through the Shinkansen ticket gate.

If you’re using both a local train ticket and a paper Shinkansen ticket, insert both together into the gate.

If you’re using a digital ticket or a linked IC card, simply follow the instructions shown when booking.

Step 4: Find Your Platform

Your ticket will show:

  • Departure time
  • Train name
  • Car number
  • Seat number (if reserved)

Electronic departure boards throughout the station also display information in English.

Step 5: Enjoy the Ride

The Shinkansen is famous for being:

  • Fast
  • Clean
  • Quiet
  • Extremely punctual

Seats are spacious, and many trains offer:

  • Power outlets
  • Overhead luggage racks
  • Restrooms
  • Free Wi-Fi on selected routes

Food and drinks are allowed, making it a great opportunity to enjoy a famous Japanese ekiben (station bento).

Bringing Large Luggage

Most luggage fits easily on the overhead racks.

However, oversized luggage may require a reserved luggage space on certain Shinkansen routes, particularly between Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Check the rules when making your reservation if you’re traveling with very large suitcases.

Things to Remember

  • Arrive at the platform a few minutes early.
  • Line up where your car number is marked.
  • Speak quietly during the journey.
  • Set your phone to silent mode.
  • Take all your belongings with you before getting off.
LOCAL TIP

If you’re traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka, try to reserve a window seat on the right-hand side of the train when leaving Tokyo. On a clear day, you’ll have one of the best chances to see Mount Fuji as the train passes through Shizuoka. It’s one of the most memorable views on any trip to Japan.
